So the title pretty much sums it up. I think you guys should open up a discord. Sort of like teamspeak but simpler. It's free and really easy to use and can help bring the community closer with another outlet of communication. Discord can be set to launch as soon as your computer starts so that way if anyone is online, you can see it in discord and maybe gather a group of friends to play on a server. Let me know what you guys think any and all feedback is appreciated.

Is it better than teamspeak? I've never tried discord but teamspeak always did the job.

it has the same functions as teamspeak with voice chat and all and has a whole lot of other features such as fully optimized chat box where people can share pictures, youtube videos, and several other media outlets without having to actually open up potentially shady links. discord also lets you sync to your various social media and gaming accounts so people can check out your youtube, steam profile, twitch, battlenet, etc. so overall i would say it is definitely better and worth taking a look at. cheers!

Okay so I looked up discord and from what I've gathered, everything you do in discord is monitored, collected and stored.

"Information we collect may include but not be limited to username, email address, and any messages, images, transient VOIP data (to enable communication delivery only) or other content you send via the chat feature.

"Data We Collect Automatically: When you interact with us through the Services, we receive and store certain information such as an IP address, device ID, and your activities within the Services."

This stored information can be sold later on:
"As we develop our business, we might sell or buy businesses or assets. In the event of a corporate sale, merger, reorganization, bankruptcy, dissolution or similar event, your information may be part of the transferred assets."

It is free but at the expense of your privacy.

I was always a fan of teamspeak as it get's the job done. If we move into discord, i might not be apart of it but I do also believe that we're still new to transition to anything just yet.

+1 for discord until we figure out if teamspeak is something we need to invest in as a community.

I remember when everyone was used to Ventrilo and wouldn't move to Teamspeak even though it clearly had better features. Now you barely run into anyone that uses Ventrilo. I feel like we're at a similar situation here, however the more I look into discord, the more shady it looks.

This is a part of their terms:
YOUR CONTENT
Any data, text, graphics, photographs and their selection and arrangement, and any other materials uploaded to the Service by you is "Your Content." You represent and warrant that Your Content is original to you and that you exclusively own the rights to such content, including the right to grant all of the rights and licenses in these Terms without the Company incurring any third party obligations or liability arising out of its exercise of such rights and licenses. All of Your Content is your sole responsibility and the Company is not responsible for any material that you upload, post, or otherwise make available.
You read that and you think they're just trying to protect themself in case you post copyrighted material. However they then add the following:

By uploading, distributing, transmitting or otherwise using Your Content with the Service, you grant to us a perpetual, nonexclusive, transferable, royalty-free, sublicensable, and worldwide license to use, host, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, and display Your Content in connection with operating and providing the Service.
In other words, any original content by you that you upload or use on Discord can be used by them as if it was their own. Upload a video for a friend to review? A song? Essay? You grant them a license to do whatever they want with it.

I use Discord every day and moderate a ~600 member discord (albeit only about 30ish people are actively chatting), so I thought I'd add in my 2 cents.

I disagree. I believe a chat could help grow the community even more.

I mean, pretty much any website you go to gathers your data and sells it. Discord isn't any different. That's not to say that it's wrong, I agree in that regard, but it happens so often to the point where if you really want to protect your privacy, you'd have to stop using most services on the internet.

I understand the concern of Discord potentially being able to "legally steal" original content, but I don't find it as a valid reason not to use it. What could they possibly use the content we create for? Further more, why would they need it at all? The Discord team has a great team of artists as easily noticeable from their website and various social media pages.

A lot of communities are making the switch from TeamSpeak to Discord as it has a lot more features and is completely free. Teamspeak might get "the job done", but Discord can do that and so much more.
